The Dyers Arms in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire later became known as The Black Tulip and it was here where all the music lovers went who were into heavy metal. At the age of ten I would go to a nearby roller disco on Saturday afternoon that played all the chart music and my mum would give me enough money for my bus fare, a few games of space invaders and the entry fee into the disco. After roller skating around in circles for hours and hours me and my friend would make our way to the bus station and we would pass "The Black Tulip" and hear rock music blaring out. Everyone who went in and out of the pub looked so cool with their long hair and leather jackets with cut off denim waistcoats and holey jeans, I wanted to be like them, but I also wanted to know what went on in there and what music they were listening to, so one day we went inside.

We walked inside and it was warm and everyone was shouting to make themselves heard over the loud music. I didn't want to go to the roller disco anymore I wanted to be in there listening to the music, I made my way over to the juke box which was high up on the wall and started to press the buttons to look at what music they were all listening to. Before I got a chance to look the landlord shouted "Oy, what you doing in here?" I turned and said "we're just looking for somebody" and pretended to slowly walk around the pub looking for "Mr Nobody" then made our exit.

Going to the roller disco never seemed the same after that, I wanted to be where the adults were listening to music, so I found out there was a disco for teenagers at a nightclub called Dr Zhivago's on a Saturday afternoon. One Saturday we went down and managed to get in, the person on the door gave me a knowing look as I blagged my way in pretending to be older than my years. As I walked down the steps into the basement (that's where the nightclub was) I could hear "Ghost Town" by The Specials being played and I can remember my heart pounding with excitement as I got to the dance floor and everybody was dancing around in their fishtail parkers and rude boy suits, I never went to the roller disco again, I had found my little slice of heaven.
